Police Say Nurse Hit With Cane, Transgendered Person Stabbed, Robbed

Raising cane may not get you into trouble, but it depends on how you lower it.

A 38-year-old patient at Norwalk Hospital was arrested after she used her cane to strike a nurse on the head when she objected to the idea of the nurse inserting a catheter into her, police said.

The patient, Ayanna Khadijah of Lexington Ave., told another nurse that she "hit that nurse good," according to police. She told police that she did raise her cane, but didn't mean to hit the nurse with it.

The nurse, who was hit on top of her head, was not bleeding after the Friday afternoon incident, but she had a bump on her head.

Picture of Norwalk man in Philly newspaper prompts call to city police

A woman reading the "Most Wanted" feature in the Northeast Times, a local Philadelphia newspaper, recognized Eric R. Carter, which led to his arrest in Norwalk on charges of being a fugitive from justice in two states.

Norwalk police gave this account of the investigation and arrest:

The woman knew Carter, 25, knew he was in Norwalk, and when she knew he was wanted, she called Norwalk police on Friday and told them they could find him at the Monterey Village public housing complex.

Carter, whose address is listed as 1622 Loretto Ave., Philadelphia, was wanted on a warrant from police in both Philadelphia and Portchester, NY.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday, just hours after the phone call, a Norwalk police officer saw Carter at Monterey Village, compared him to a picture of him provided by another police department, and approached him.

Asked for his name, Carter replied, "Jerome," but later admitted to his real name. Police arresting Carter found two small bags of marijuana on him. He was not charged with drug possession, perhaps because he was least wanted by Norwalk police.

Transgendered person stabbed, robbed of a purse

In one of three unrelated incidents over the weekend, a transgendered person, man-to-woman, was assaulted and robbed on Woodward Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday. Police were inconsistent in calling the victim "he" or "she" but mostly used "she."

Police gave this account:

Police were called to the scene at 2:19 a.m., where they found the victim sitting outside, holding her stomach. She had been stabbed in the lower right part of her abdomen.

The victim, a 27-year-old Norwalk resident, said she had never before seen the man who stabbed her and took her purse, and there may have been two robbers. She was taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment of her wound.

Robberies, successful and failed

In one of two unrelated reports of robberies over the weekend, a Norwalk man walking near 33 Seaview Avenue at about 10 p.m. Saturday was mugged by a man who threatened to cut him.

Police gave these accounts of the incidents:

The robber approached the victim and demanded his wallet. Although the victim didn't see a knife or other blade, the robber said he would cut up the victim if he started fighting. The victim handed over a wallet containing $10, his driver's license and credit cards. The robber then ran in the direction of Fisherman's World, a business on Seaview Avenue.

In another incident, at 11:25 p.m. Friday police received a report of a masked man who walked into the J&T Shell gas station at 307 Connecticut Ave. and demanded money from the cashier.

The cashier refused.

The masked man then fled the store.

Police on Monday said they would review surveillance video from the store. No one was hurt, and no weapon was displayed in the incident.
