Hometown: Darien, Connecticut
Birthday: January 28
Much of my early childhood was spent in Darien, including Weed Beach and in the woods behind the old Baker School on Noroton Avenue. After Kindergarten and First Grade at Baker School, my family moved out of town for 10 years, until my junior year of high school, when we moved back. I joined the school paper at Darien High and had a blast. At Trinity College in Hartford, I wrote an opinion column for the student newspaper and found that writing was what I wanted to do. I've been addicted ever since.
I've worked at various newspapers in Massachusetts and New York state before moving back to Fairfield County, where I worked at the Hour, covering Westport, then cops and then courts.
I later worked as a correspondent for The Advocate and was then a reporter for the Fairfield County Business Journal and its sister publication in Westchester, then did more freelance work, including some for HersamAcorn's New Canaan Advertiser.
I used to do the daily New York Times crossword, but now I prefer the KenKen puzzle. I have a serious bibliophilia problem (please contribute to the cause: we can wipe out bibliophilia in a short time if we all switch to Kindle and burn all the paper books). I see about 40 movies a year of all types except horror. Historic sites and hiking trails interest me. One day I will see more Shakespeare plays. I play no sports. My cooking skills are limited, but people love my apple pies.
Politics
How would you describe your political beliefs?
I believe democracy only works with an informed citizenry, and no system of government works all that well. I think human nature has enough flaws in it that we'll never do better than make some improvements in our society, but improving it is vitally important. As a journalist, I'm not here to make those improvements. I'm here to report all the relevant facts about problems and issues, and do it in a way that sparks the interest of people.
Are you registered with a certain party?
No.
Religion
How religious would you consider yourself?
I'm a Catholic who goes to Mass.

Hello David I was wondering if you had considered my blog application? Thank you.

It is absolutely disgraceful that David would delete my post (for no cause as per acceptable use policy) and then closes the thread. David Gurliacci is not applying the rules appropriately and it is entirely unfair to leave Luca's comment intact with my having right of reply. Is this how New Canaan patch intends to comport itself? Disgraceful.

Luca, perhaps the difference is between "survivor" and "victim". Five people died; two people had injuries. Does that help you to figure out which term applies to which persons. And one of those two survivors with minor injuries APPEARS to have acted in an incredibly stupid, negligent, idiotic, drunken, dumb or incoherent manner - pick any one of the terms I now used but you can't make a serious defense of the actions of the man. When people cause their own death through their own foolish actions we give them the Darwin Award. When people cause the death of others we charge them with manslaughter or various other legally defined terms. We then let the courts decide if guilty and to what extent punishable. Or citizens may choose to launch a civil suit to recover damages as well. Your opinion is that the person that acted in a apparently reckless manner should be shown sensitivity and consideration - I say, five people are dead and we should investigate causes as the dead are the real victims. I think the "sensitivity and consideration" thing claimed by you and others might just relate more to the fact that there probably was no intent to harm on the part of Mr Bucina. But it is a misconception that intent is required to prove someone guilty of a crime including manslaughter. Oh and all men should know how to handle fire; which is essentially what CP said in the first place before the editor decided to invade the patch public square for the usual politically correct nonsense.

David,
Hi - I am Joyce Abate, owner of Carousel Preschool. You have us on Norwalk Patch, but the info isn't exactly accurate. Is it possible for me to go in and fix what isn't accurate? Also, can I connect Carousel's web site directly to Carousel's Norwalk Patch address, as is done with other preschools?
Thanks
Joyce
