Police: Man, 19, Drives Intoxicated, Hits Car, Fences

The 19-year-old driver was traveling at a high rate of speed on Ward Street before hitting the vehicle and two fences, a witness told police.

An intoxicated 19-year-old Norwalk man damaged a parked car and two fences at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday as he drove down Ward Street, police said.

Norwalk police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the matter:

Jose Zotello was driving with two passengers west on Ward Street in the area of Ohio Avenue and Thames Street at what a witness told police was an extremely high speed for the road, which has a posted speed limit of 35 mph.

At one point, Zotello's vehicle struck a parked car. It also struck a picket fence at 25 Ward St., knocking over about six feet of it, then a chain link fence at 23 Ward St., damaging about eight feet of that one.

Zotello smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glazed over and slightly red and he was having trouble completing sentences when a police officer spoke with him. One of his passengers walked away from the scene before police arrived, and another one complained of hip and back pain.

Zotello, of 16 Camp St., didn't pass field sobriety tests given to him at the scene, and he was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol. Bond and court information were unavailable from police on Wednesday morning.
