Five Things You Should Know About Norwalk: Tuesday, March 8

Mardi Gras, a state senator, a fire truck and a movie you'll probably have to wait to see.

  1. Today is Mardi Gras—Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday and therefore the last day (and night) before the start of Lent for Roman Catholics and some other Christian denominations. Jeff's Cuisine will have a Mardi Gras happy hour from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., with "Jay Prince and Friends" (click on the link for more details; reservations for food recommended). will have "beads, beads and more beads," drink specials and a DJ from 9 p.m. until closing. At , seafood gumbo and jambalaya are on tonight's menu, with Nardy Boy in the venue.
  2. Mark Your Calendar: State Sen. Bob Duff, a Democrat representing all of Norwalk and part of Darien, will hold "office hours"—that is, be available to anyone who wants to stop by and speak to him about state and local issues— from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12 at Dairy King, 169 Main St.
  3. The body of soldier David R. Fahey Jr., a Norwalk native, was escorted home yesterday with honors. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday. After that, flags in Connecticut will return to full staff.
  4. If you wanted to see that advanced screening of the latest film version of Jane Eyre (with an appearance from the film's director, Cary Fukunaga), at the on Westport Ave. on Thursday ... you're apparently too late. The event, organized by the Westport Arts Center, is sold out, they say on their Web site. But they also suggest that you can still call for more information. Is that just for ticket holders? Could there be cancelations that a diehard Charlotte Bronte fan or film fanatic could take advantage of? Here's the Web page, and you can always hope.
  5. The is donating its 1982 American LaFrance ladder truck to the National Fire Department of Panama. Capt. Luis Carlos Endara, Chief of Brigade, is scheduled to visit Rowayton on March 17 to officially thank the department at a small ceremony.
