If it's Monday, it must be time to eat...
Katrina's Catering and Deli on Liberty Square: A new place in Norwalk that deserves a try ... get in before the crowds find out.
To turn the format of this blog a little bit on its ear, I want to share with you a recent discovery. I needed some glass cut … and I headed over to the store on Liberty Square to get it. I placed my order and was about to go on my way and something caught my eye. A new deli … more than a new deli … a caterer. A sucker for a local joint … I stuck my head inside. Wow … was I blown away.
I love to eat and I have had my share of interesting gastronomical experiences. I have eaten in the souks in Bahrain and enjoyed the lamb and yogurt. I have had mozzarella in Naples that was so fresh it defies explanation. I know where to get a shrimp po’ boy in New Orleans that will make you weep. So, I feel a little more that qualified to let you in on my opinion.
I was dubious upon entering the place that had been a vacant storefront not more than a few months earlier when I had been there looking at the property out back. The kitschy Marilyn Monroe prints on the wall instantly put me at ease … and I started to look over the menu.

I went with something that seemed a little ambitious. A roast beef wedge that incorporated bleu cheese, spinach and a dressing along with some hot peppers … but that was still served cold. I grabbed a bag of chips and a soda … and headed out the door impressed that I had scored lunch and received change back from a ten spot.
That hoagie/grinder/wedge/sub was the bomb. The cheese was sharp and delicious and contrasted so well with the perfectly delicious heat generated by the peppers … neither obnoxious nor subtle, they worked together to create an experience. Great roll … which can make or break this sort of sandwich … and a well thought out and executed combination all in all.

I will tell you one thing … I am going back. Value and creativity, a surprise, yes ... and one that I hope will continue to delight into the summer. I have not sampled the menu enough to really give it the golden thumbs up … but I am looking forward to doing just that. Meet me there on Tuesday … I have to meet some people at City Hall earlier and this will be on my way home … call it noon and if you tell them that Dave sent you … well, they will just think you are odd. The Livveracci may have some competition. More on that later …
Give me some feedback on this … I like to hit places off the beaten path ... and I share my opinions readily … if you think it is worthwhile … I will do a once a week sandwich report.
