Oyster Shell Park Re-Opens

The city of Norwalk is pleased to invite the Norwalk community to a reopening of Oyster Shell Park and the unveiling of the Phase I.

The park provides Norwalk residents and all visitors a unique place from which to view the Norwalk Harbor and both waterfronts east and west of the Norwalk River. It is also a place for locals to walk dogs, wheel babies and ride bikes on newly refurbished trails.

For those who remember Norwalk of the 1950’s and 1960’s, this represents a real transformation of a working landfill to an attractive environmentally sustainable community asset.  The Park development began with a highly creative award-winning Master Plan design crafted by BSC Group and was put into place by LaRosa Building Group. In addition, the project implementation team involved Recreation & Parks, Public Works and the Redevelopment Agency.

Said Mayor Moccia, “None of this would have happened but for the funding assistance from the Department of Economic & Community Development and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Success of the State funding support is thanks in large measure to the active work by Norwalk’s elected representatives to the State Legislature, which is especially appreciated.” Mayor Moccia continued, “The collaborative effort between city departments in overseeing the design and construction of the park demonstrates again the quality of Norwalk’s public employee workforce.”

The transformation of what once was an eyesore into one of the most beautiful landscapes in Norwalk is testament to the collaborative work of State and local agencies. The value of Norwalk’s riverside environment will benefit for generations to come thanks to this important project.

Significantly, the Park has been designed to meet the criteria for certification by the American Society of Landscape Architects Sustainable.
