Drunk Driving Checkpoint In Norwalk Saturday

Start of campaign up to Memorial Day to locate intoxicated drivers.

Norwalk Police will set up a checkpoint Saturday to identify intoxicated drivers. The operation will occur on West Avenue. The checkpoint is being paid for by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Safety Program. Police spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Cotto said a provision of the grant is that the public be informed ahead of time when and where the checkpoint will be located. In the past, police have established checkpoints on West Avenue between the Interstate 95 overpass and Reed Street.

Norwalk Man Accused of Repeatedly Sexually Assaulting Then 8-Year-Old Girl

Now 16, she tells police attacks occurred eight years ago, while she was in the first and second grades.

A city man was arrested last week for allegedly repeatedly sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl eight years ago. Lionel Chavarria, 37, of 17 Sention Ave., was charged on Friday with three counts of first-degree sexual assault and three counts of risk of injury to a minor. Police released details about Chavarria's arrest Monday morning. Police spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Cotto said the girl accused Chavarria of assaulting her more than three times, but she could only remember sufficient details about three of the attacks for authorities to bring charges against him. Cotto said the girl, who is now 16 years old, recently told a youth counselor about the alleged attacks, and the counseler contacted the state Department of Children and Families. …

Teen Accused of Striking and Killing Jogger Will Be Tried As An Adult

Although she is 16 years old, seriousness of charge requires she be prosecuted in state Superior Court.

A 16-year-old New Canaan girl accused of striking and killing a jogger while driving an SUV in March will be prosecuted as an adult. The charge against her of negligent homicide with a motor vehicle requires she be tried in state Superior Court, rather than Juvenile Court. The accident occurred the morning of March 24 on New Canaan Avenue. An affidavit Norwalk Police prepared to obtain an arrest warrant for her alleges she was using her iPhone to look at the New Canaan High School website when she struck the jogger, 44-year-old Norwalk resident Kenneth Dorsey. Norwalk H.S. Student Accused of Filching Cash From Backpacks

Caught after bragging about thefts, police said.

A 15-year-old Norwalk High School student was arrested Monday for allegedly stealing money from students' backpacks. Police spokesman Lt. Praveen John said the student is accused of going through backpacks in the boys locker room and taking cash out of three of them amounting to $114. John said the victims of the thefts heard he was bragging about taking the money and reported that to school administrators. School security officers took him into custody. Police could not release the boy's name because he is a juvenile. He was issued a juvenile summons.

Truck Burglarized At Tree Service Company

Ladder found placed against fence that encloses storage yard.

Police were called to the Davey Tree and Lawn Care company at 44 Slocum Street Tuesday morning on a report a truck had been burglarized. An employee told officers the storage yard was locked at 7 p.m. Monday and when he returned Tuesday at 6 a.m. he noticed the bed of a dump truck was raised. He said he then found a cargo cabinet on the truck was broken open. Three chain saws worth about $1,900 were missing from it, along with two ropes worth $200 each. The employee said he did not know how the thief got into the truck since the key for it is in the offfice. A ladder was found placed against the fence that surrounds the yard.

Greenwich Woman Faces DWI and Narcotics Charges

Driving at high speed and failing to turn left while in a left turn only lane draws officer's attention, police said.

A Greenwich woman faces charges of drunk driving and possession of narcotics after she was stopped by a patrol officer who said she was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to turn while in a left turn only lane. The officer said he observed her car traveling at high speed on Wall Street, and after failing to turn left, he stopped her on West Avenue at 1:36 a.m. The officer reported that when he approached her, she had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and her eyes were red and glazed. He said she asked him why he stopped her and told him she had just come from a bar and wanted to go home. The woman, later identified as Irene Larusso, failed a field test for sobriety, according to the officer. He said he found a folded piece …

Norwalk Man One of Two Charged in Stamford Storm Drain Thefts

One suspect was from Stamford, the other a Norwalk resident. They face felony charges for their alleged roles.

Two men were charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and felony larceny after leaving a lot of holes in their story, police said Monday. Kenneth Alfano, 20, of 26 Commerce St. in Norwalk, and Stamford resident Luis Sarceno, 21, of 23 Wardwell St., were arrested in connection to an incident where storm drain covers were going missing from around Shippan Point, according to authorities. Sarceno and Alfano are alleged to have traveled to Norwalk after lifting the storm drain covers—four in total—where they attempted to turn them in at a junkyard facility, police said. According to authorities, at this point, the manager of the facility was suspicious that the cast-iron covers were in the men's possession illegally and notified …

New Canaan Teen Charged with Negligent Homicide in SUV vs. Jogger Death

Norwalk man, who was jogging along New Canaan Ave., died after he was transported to the hospital.

A 16-year-old New Canaan girl was arrested by warrant Saturday, accused of striking a jogger with her SUV in March that resulted in fatal injuries. The girl, who authorities can't identify because of her age, was charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, use of a handheld telephone by someone under 18 years old, and failure to drive in the proper lane. She came to police headquarters after being told officers had obtained a warrant for her arrest. She will be prosecuted in Juvenile Court in Bridgeport, which is not open to the public. Her first court appearance is scheduled for May 24. The man killed, 44-year-old Norwalk resident Kenneth Dorsey, was struck from behind on March 24  at about 9:30 a.m. while he was jogging along …

Six months? $1,000 fine? Someone DIED because this teenager was unable to keep off her cellphone. If someone is killed like this, the driver should have their license revoked for a minimum of one year. She should have her cellphone revoked for the same period.
