NHS Marching Bears Win Against Trumbull Golden Eagles: 87.6 to 86.

The NHS Marching Bears update us on their busy competition schedule. On Nov. 2, 2013 the Cavalcade of Bands takes place at NHS from 5:00-9:00p.m. and will feature a variety of marching bands including Brien McMahon, Wilton and Norwalk High School.

The Marching Bears precision marching band continued their winning ways as they rolled to another victory last Saturday at Newtown High School.

Once more their day started early as they arrived for practice in the morning at Andrews Field. Later, they reported to Testa Field to help root on the Norwalk Football Bears.

They left the football game before the contest concluded and traveled to Newtown High School for a competition of their own. During the evening Norwalk again competed head to head with Trumbull High School in the National Class (Newtown is also in that class but as the host school they only performed in 'exhibition').

When the scores were finally tallied, the band representatives gathered on the field. When the announcer got to the National Class bands he announced the Second Place Winner as...... Trumbull High School. This caused a great deal of celebration among the large contingent of Norwalk High School supporters who were gathered in the packed stands (and on the surrounding hills). The final results were Norwalk Marching Bears - 87.6 and the Trumbull Golden Eagles - 86.

It is important to note that in these competitions that bands are competing against themselves as much or more so than against the other bands. As Mr. Rivera the Band Director has said that their goal is to put on a performance that is a close to perfect and with their best effort as possible. That way they will be rewarded with the scoring. They have increased their total score by 11 points over the course of the season already -- even as they change and fine tune their program.

This weekend they will perform on Saturday night at the Walt Whitman High School in Huntington, Long Island in a New York State Field Band Conference contest. The next day, they travel to Arlington HS in Lagrange, N.Y. for another NYSFBC tilt.

We all wish them well.
