No School, Seal-Watching Cruise, Library Book Sale, Peachwave Marathon

This exhibit will explore the development of the holiday traditions during the Victorian era in America. An overview of mid-to-late 19th century holiday technologies and toys will also be explored. The Dining Room will highlight New Year’s feasts and menus, while throughout the Mansion the exhibit will tell the evolving story of the Christmas tree and its decorations. Visitors will see its evolution from 1850 to 1900s, from small tabletop tree with edibles and handmade ornaments, to lavishly embellished trees that stand on the floor and almost reach the ceiling.

Starting Dec. 28, Seal-Watching Cruises at Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk afford a chance to see some of the seals that spend their winters in Long Island Sound. These invigorating outings aboard the research vessel Oceanic occur many weekends from late December through late March. That’s when the seals come down from northern waters, which serve as their summer breeding and pupping areas.

The Aquarium’s cruises seek out the seals to observe them near the Norwalk Islands as they “haul out” to rest on rocks exposed at low tide. Maritime Aquarium educators also will point out wintering waterfowl on the Sound, including buffleheads, mergansers, Brant geese, long-tailed
ducks and other feathered seasonal visitors. Dates and departure times vary by the tide schedule. Initial cruises are: Sat., Dec. 28 at 1:00 p.m.;
Sun., Dec. 29 at 1:30 p.m.; and Sat., Jan. 11 at 1:00 p.m.

The Polar Express at the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. Show times Dec. 26-Jan. 1:  4:00p.m. & 7:30 p.m. daily.
