Norwalk's Brandon Riggins Wins CIAC Class L Wrestling State Title In 189-Pound Division

Riggins, the 10th seed, defeats Avon's Dave St.Onge 16-3 in the final

Norwalk's Brandon Riggins won the gold medal Saturday in the 189-pound weight class in the CIAC Class L wrestling  state championships at Bristol Eastern High School.

In the final, Riggins earned a 16-3 decision over Avon's Dave St.Onge, helping the Bears place 18th out of 30 teams. No other Norwalk wrestlers finished in the top six.

Riggins was a surprise winner as he entered the tournament as only the 10th seed.

After earning a bye in the first round, Riggins pinned Fermi's Aaron Larame at 1:21 in his second-round match.

He then routed No. 2 seed Jared Murphy of Darien 21-4 in the quarterfinals in one of the most lopsided matches in the tournament.

Riggins chalked up another impressive victory in the semifinals, besting No. 3 Kyle Hoskins of Masuk, 16-4.

After the early pin, Riggins won his next three matches by a combined score 53-11.

He now advances to the state Open meet next weekend at the New Haven Athletic Center. The top four finishers in each eight weight class earned the right to compete in the state Open event.
