Norwalk Sports Roundup: March 16

Your daily interactive digest for all Norwalk scores, schedules and standings -- and a place to add information and images for all youth sports

Norwalk travel basketball teams fared well in the recent Fairfield County Basketball League tournaments. The FCBL is a 250 team league, including  travel teams from every town within Fairfield County, and about two dozen teams from beyond the county’s borders (see FCBLhoops.org).

After three month of regular season play that starts in December, the FCBL splits each boys and girls grade into tournament pools of peer groups. Six Norwalk teams received bids into the league’s highest level tournament pools for their grade.

The Norwalk Girls Basketball Association seventh grade team received a very unusual honor. Because they were so dominant in their 25-win regular season, they were promoted up a grade to play in the second level eighth grade tournament. At that higher grade, they were still able to win their opening round game.

NGBA’s fifth grade girls entered their grade’s top pool as the No. seed and advanced to the finals before losing to Newtown.

The Carver Center boys teams were well represented as well. Their sixth grade team entered the top pool as the No. 10 seed (out of 42 teams), and strung together four straight upsets to take the title.

Their eighth grade boys team came in as the No. 7 seed (out of 51 teams), and advanced to the semifinals were they lost to the ultimate champions, Darien. Their seventh grade team was the No.8 seed (out of 42 teams) and was also knocked out by the tourney winner, Fairfield.

The TMT fifth grade boys earned the No. 5 seed and advanced to the semifinals, where they knocked out by the tournament winner, Danbury.

The next event in the Connecticut Challenge Speaker Series features a talk by Sean Swarner, a two-time cancer survivor, mountain climber, and author of Keep Climbing: How I Beat Cancer and Reached the Top of the World.

Swarner shares his inspirational life story Thursday, April 12 at Roger Ludlowe Middle School at 7:30 PM. The event is free to the public and made possible in part with support from People’s United Bank.  Registration is required at www.CTChallenge.org/keepclimbing.

Swarner, who was named the 2007 Jimmy V Foundation’s Don’t Ever Give Up Award winner for his courage, will take you on his life’s journey through a dynamic audiovisual presentation, that is not only inspiring, but offers a message of hope that taps into that motivational adrenaline rush that runs through all of us. The presentation will include his climb up the 29,035-foot giant that is Mount Everest, surviving hurricane-force winds and crossing crevasses thousands of feet deep on rickety aluminum ladders. Swarner will offer insight into the grueling journey of his youth and his fight for survival in overcoming two bouts with cancer. Finally, you will trek with Sean to the highest peaks in Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Prior to the event, a special reception and flag signing for cancer survivors will be held at 6:30 pm.  Swarner will carry the flag up Mt. Kilimanjaro this July and plant it at the summit.  Following the event, Swarner will sign copies of his book, Keep Climbing.  A limited quantity will be available for purchase or you may bring your own copy for him to sign.

Additional support for this program provided by BMW of Bridgeport and Aetna.
