Norwalk won the U-11 group A-League championship and was the Southwest District finalist at the FC Stars Cup this season. In addition, the squad placed second in its group at the Parsippany Invitational.

2. Norwalk football still alive for FCIAC title game

New Canaan's 36-29 loss to Stamford on Saturday -- the Rams' first defeat against the Black Knights since 1977 - has given the Norwalk football team at least a mathematical chance to play in the FCIAC championship game Nov. 18 at Trumbull's McDougall Stadium.

But the Bears (6-1 FCIAC) need losses by Greenwich (7-0) and New Canaan (7-1), who are ranked ahead of them, to qualify.

The biggest benifactor from New Canaan's setback on Saturday was Greenwich, which can clinch a spot in the FCIAC title game with a win at Danbury on Thursday.

Since the Cardinals play early, they would have luxury of sitting back and awaiting their opponent.

It probably would be be Staples, which can clinch a berth with  a win on Saturday against winless Westhill, although the Wreckers will be without top runner Joey Zelkowitz (separated shoulder).

Even if the Wreckers (7-0 FCIAC) should somehow lose to the Vikings, they still might have enough bonus points to qet into the game.

New Canaan hosts Trumbull (2-4) on Saturday, and the health of quarterback Matt Milano could be a concern after he suffered an apparent concussion against Stamford.

However, Rams coach Lou Marinelli told the Stamford Advocate on Saturday night that Milano had a migrane headache and should be okay.

Here are the rankings after the weekend:

1. Staples (7-0) 131.3

2. Greenwich (7-0) 122.5

3. New Canaan (7-1) 115.6

4. Norwalk (6-1) 112.5

5. Darien (7-1) 110.0

All five have a mathematical shot. New Canaan needs a Greenwich loss and Darien needs losses by Greenwich, New Canaan and Norwalk.

The Bears have a much better chance to make the Class LL state playoffs. They are fourth in this week's ranking and can qualify by winning their final two games against winless Fairfield Ludlowe this weekend and McMahon on Thanksgiving.
