In addition to top male and female finisher awards, the race included a variety of age group awards, from 13 years old to 70 years and older.
For the third consecutive year, the event also featured a 5K Health Walk, designed for moms, dads, and children of all ages. The 5K was hosted in conjunction with the Norwalk Department of Health’s “Be a NorWALKER” program to encourage residents to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives.
Like the 10K race, the scenic Long Island Sound walk route began and ended at Calf Pasture Beach.
“Congratulations to Wantuil, Julie, and all of our age group winners on their success at today's Mother's Day 10K, which was blessed with sunny skies and great racing conditions,” said Don Capone, president of the Lightfoot Running Club. “On behalf of the Lightfoot Running Club, I offer thanks to all of the runners, walkers, and volunteers who came out to support the race and health walk, and especially to the moms who were our honored participants today.”
Net proceeds from the 2011 Mother’s Day 10K Race will be donated to the American Heart Association while proceeds from the 5K walk will be donated to local charities. Both events were held in honor of the late Captain Edward T. Donellan of the Norwalk Police Department.
The Annual Mother’s Day 10K Race/5K Health Walk is the first running event of the 2011 season to be hosted by the Norwalk Lightfoot Running Club.
Beginning in June, the club also hosts a series of summertime road races, ranging from 3 to 11 miles, as part of its annual Lightfoot Summer Series. It concludes the 2011 running season in September, with its Annual Sam Elpern Half Marathon (13.1 miles).
