Shorehaven's Tommy McDonagh and Cameron Wilson are in contention after the first day of the 56th Ike Championship at the Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville, N.J.

“My game is as good as it’s ever been,” said McDonagh, a two-time Met Open champion in 2006 and 2008.  “My plan is to continue to hit fairways and keep the ball below the hole so I can put myself in good spots to make birdies.”

Wilson posted a score of 2-over par 72, leaving him tied for 10th. After becoming the youngest winner of the Met Amateur in 2009, Wilson is back from his freshman year at Stanford University looking to claim another MGA major title. He finished third at the 2010 Ike at Metropolis.

Two-time Met Junior and 2010 Carter Cup champion David Pastore of Griff Harris is in third place after shooting a 1-under 69 Monday at the Somerset Hills Country Club, Bernardsville, N.J.

Pastiore is  three shots behing first-round leader Pat Wilson of Panther Valley after an up-and-down round that included seven birdies, four bogeys, and one double bogey.

The 18-hole cut came at 7-over 77, with a large group of 57 players surviving to advance to the Ike’s 36-hole second day. Eight players are within five strokes of Wilson’s lead, setting the stage for an exciting final day over one of the most highly regarded golf courses in the Met Area.

The tournament is guaranteed to have a new winner as defending two-time Ike champion Mike Ballo Jr. turned professional late in 2010.

-- Norwalk advanced to the final of the 12-year-old Cal Ripken District One tournament with a 5-3 victory over New Canaan on Sunday.
