Willy Velez and Stan Wolpiak combined on a two-hitter Sunday as Trumbull blanked Norwalk 10-0 in the finals of the 15-year-old District One Babe Ruth tournament at Unity Park.

Trumbull advances to the state tournament, which begins July 15 in New Milford. Sunday's game was called due to the mercy rule after Trumbull scored five runs in the bottom of the, the last three coming on two bases-loaded walks and a wild pitch.

In the 13-year-old Babe Ruth tournament, Norwalk routed Stratford 19-0 in a loser's bracket game to stay alive.

In the 14-year-old tournament, Norwalk will play in the final on Tuesday at McMahon (5:30 p.m.) against Fairfield, which stayed alive with a 4-1 win over Trumbull on Sunday in the loser's bracket final.

Velez tossed the first four innings, allowing only an infield single in the third. He walked one and struck out five.

Wolpiak gave up a single in the sixth to Jonah Singer, who was out trying to stretch it into a double. Norwalk did not get a runner past second the entire game.

Chris Masi paced Trumbull's 10-hit attack with three hits and two runs scored. Jeff Sams (three runs scored) Valez and Tim Keckler each added a pair of hits for the home team.

After Trumbull grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on an error, Velez and and Ryan Fitz delivered RBI singles in  the third.

After Keckler scored from third following a wild pickoff attempt at second, Keckler's RBI single made it 5-0 in the fifth.

Velez and Masi added RBI singles in Trumbull's five-run sixth. Trumbull, which went 3-0 in the three-team tournament, scored in every inning except the second.

In the District One Little League tournament Sunday, Norwalk fell to Ridgefield National, 8-7.

Norwalk (1-1) is tied Wilton (1-1) for third place in Pool B, trailing Darien American (3-0) and Wilton (2-0).

Norwalk is back in action on Tuesday, when it takes on Wilton at Bill Terry Field (7:30 p.m.).

-- McMahon defense back Clement Abonyi and wide receiver Brandon Davis and Norwalk offensive lineman Evan Opdahl are on the Fairfield County team that will play in Friday's 15th annual Hall of Fame Football Classic at West Haven's Ken Strong Stadium (7:30 p.m.)  

The contest matches pits graduated high school seniors from Fairfield County against graduated seniors from New Haven County. New Haven leads the series, 10-4.

The game is presented by the Ralph Desantis Fairfield County and the Gene Casey New Haven County Chapters of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Tickets are $ 7 each and will be available at the gate.
