Norwalk Scores and Standings: July 19

Monday's scheduled game between Norwalk (1-1) and Tri-County-New London (1-1) in the loser's bracket of the 14-year-old Babe Ruth state tournament was postponed because of rain. The game now will be played on Tuesday at Mercer Field in New London at 5:30 p.m.

In Tuesday's other game,  Stamford will take on North Haven at the Waterford Babe Ruth Field at 5:30 p.m. after also being postponed. The winners of those two games are expected to play on Wednesday at a field to be determined.

Waterford and Simsbury, 2-0 in the tournament, are scheduled to meet on Wednesday at Waterford in the winner's bracket final.

Wilton dropped into the loser's bracket with a 10-8 loss to Simsbury on Sunday.

The Norwalk Riptide softball team defeated New Milford 11-3 on Sunday to win the 14-year-old Babe Ruth softball state championship. The Riptide finished 4-0 in the tournament.

Norwalk advanced to the New England Regionals, to be played in Lynn, Mass., from July 29-31.

Recent Norwalk graduates Jake Zuniga and Andrew Torres are members of the Beachside Soccer Club that will compete this week in the United Soccer League's sixth annual Super-20 North American finals.

The two Norwalk players, along with former Staples stars  Frankie Bergonzi, Brendan Lesch and Greg Gudis  are the only 18-year-olds on a team dominated from college sophomores.

The team leaves on Tuesday for the tournament, which will be played Thursday through Sunday in Tampa, Fla.

Bergonzi, Lesch and Gudis joined the older club after the U-18 season ended. They also played for Beachside's U-20 squad last year as 17-year-olds.

The men’s field includes 12 teams, including two that have yet to lose a match this season. One of those teams, the Columbus Crew (7-0-1) of the Midwest Division, is the defending Super-20 Men’s champion. Beachside qualified by finishing third with a 7-3 record in the Mid-Atlantic League.

The nationals consist of three groups of four. Beachside's group includes Lower Merion, Toronto Lynx and North Virginia Royals.

Beachside openes on Thursday against North Virginia, then takes on takes the Toronto Lynx on Friday and Lowe Marion on Saturday. The semifinals also are set for Saturday, with the championship game slated for Sunday.

The three group winners and the top second-place finisher advance to the playoff round.

The Norwalk junior American Legion team clinched a berth in the state tournament on Sunday, defeating Fairfield, 5-2. Earlier Sunday, Norwalk lost to Stamford 6-5, keeping the pressure on the team

Norwalk finished the year at 15-11 after Monday's scheduled finale against Bridgeport was cancelled.

The Norwalk senior Legion team finished 20-7 following Sunday's 9-8 win over Greenwich.

Norwalk settled for second place, four games behind Greenwich, and now enters the play-in tournament.

A total of eight teams from zone four qualified for postseason play - Greenwich, Norwalk, Trumbull, and Stamford in the senior ranks and Stamford, Ridgefield, Trumbull and Norwalk in the juniors.

Norwalk senior, the No. 10 seed, hosts the Ellington-Waterford winner on Wednesday for a spot in the main tournament. The junior pairings with be announced Tuesday.
