1. Norwalk wins opener in Legion Northeast Regionals

The Norwalk senior American Legion team got off to a good start Thursday in the Northeast Regionals as Spencer Jacoby and Kevin
Lawrence each had three hits in a 7-2 victory over Gayton, the Maine state champion, at the Ballpark at Old Orchard Beach.

Gayton, which won its second straight Maine title, came into the game with a 26-1 record and averaging 11 runs per game. However, it
was shut down by Norwalk ace Leon Fleming, who allowed two runs - one earned - and just hits over seven innings.

Fleming, who was named the most outstanding pitcher in the Connecticut state tournament, did experience some control problems
Thursday.  But he worked around seven walks to to pitch Norwalk into the second round of the tournament on Friday against Worcester, Mass, at 12:30 p.m.

Leading 2-0, Norwalk broke open a close game with three runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to build a 7-1 cushion.

Jacoby opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third before Lucas Labry's run-scoring groundout made it 2-0 in the fourth.

Fleming and Labry added run-scoring hits in the sixth before Jacoby scored on an wild pitch and Kevin Cawley delivered an RBI single in the seventh to complete Norwalk's scoring.

James Welch tossed the final two innings for Norwalk, which won its first state championship in 83 years of Legion baseball in Connecticut.

Worcester, the Massachusetts state champion, advanced with a 3-1 victory over Whitestown, N.Y., in Thursday's first game.

2. McDonagh advances in Met Amateur

Shorehaven's Tommy McDonagh tied for 12th Thursday with a 143 in qualifying for the 109th Met Amatuer championship at Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley, N.Y.

McDonagh, the reigning Connecticut state amateur champion, struggled in the morning with a round of 75, but rebounded with a round of 68 in the afternoon, which enabled him to advance to the first round of match play on Friday. The low 16 scores survived the cut.

McDonagh was one of only two players from Fairfield County to make the cut. He was joined by David Pastore of the Griff Harris Club in Greenwich.

Pastore finished fifth in qualifying with rounds of 66, which was the low score of the day, and 73 for a 36-hole total of 139. 

McDonagh and Pastore will face each other in the round of 16 on Friday morning at 8 a.m.  The quarterfinals follow in the afternoon.

3. PGA Junior golf at Silvermine

John Collins of Wilton carded aa 2-over par 72 to share medalist honors in the Metropolitan PGA Junior Tour's tournament at Silvermine Golf Club in Norwalk on Wednesday.

Collins, 16, who attends Trinity-Pawling in New York, shared top honors with Matt Malhke of Westchester, N.Y., in the 15-18 boys division. There was no playoff.

Among other area players, Redding's Robbie Frierson carded a 73 while Westport's Peter Richards of Westport signed for a 77. Norwalk's Henry Grillo shot a 92 and Westport's Matt Scherzler finished with a 94. 

4. Mike Garrity basketball summer camp

The Mike Garrity Elite Basketball Summer Camp at Compo Beach is set for the weeks of Aug. 15-19 and Aug. 22-26 from 2-4 p.m. each day.

The camp will be geared toward players from kindergarten through eighth grade and campers will be broken into groups based on age and skill level.

The camp stresses fundamentals. Development will come through drills, lectures and competition. Cost is $275 with a $75 discount for all players that sign up for both weeks.
