Hey Greenwich! Did You Know ... a GHS Football Standout Will Be on TV?

Football legends Phil Simms and Amani Toomer served as judges in the first-ever high school quarterback competition that featured Greenwich High School standout Liam O'Neil.

Today is Tuesday, July 17, 2012, and it's National Peach Ice Cream Day ... rather appropriate, an icy delight on such a hot day!

Today's birthdays:

  • Motocross racer Carey Hart who is married to singer Pink is 37.
  • "Knight Rider" and "Baywatch" actor David Hasselhoff is 60.
  • Actor Donald Sutherland is 77.
  • Award winning author and historian David McCullough is 79.
  • Wild-haired comedian Phyllis Diller is 95.

This Day in History:

In 1941, New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio failed to get a hit against the Cleveland Indians, which brings his historic 56-game hitting streak to an end.

In 1956, the movie-musical High Society, starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra, opened in theaters around the United States—the last film Kelly acted in before marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco.

In 1996, shortly after takeoff from Kennedy International Airport, a TWA Boeing 747 jetliner bound for Paris — Flight 800 — exploded over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 230 people aboard.

Things you should know:

There's going to be a strong Greenwich connection tonight when MSG Varsity, Cablevision’s 24/7 high school network premieres the first "Tri-State Quarterback Showdown."

The show can be seen at 7:30 p.m. on Optimum TV Channel 14.

The television special features the top 24 high school quarterbacks from the New York Metro area — including Liam O'Neil of the Greenwich high School Cardinals football team — competing for the “Showdown Champion” title through various challenges and obstacles testing their
speed, strength, accuracy. New York Giants veterans Phil Simms and Amani Toomer serve as judges provide commentary.

Other lower Fairfield County athletes invited to participate in the competition held last month at New Rochelle (NY) High School were Henry Baldwin of Darien High School and Jack Massie of Staples High School in Westport.

The show will be re-broadcast on Tuesday, July 17: 9:30pm, 11:30pm, 2am; Friday, July 20: 12:30pm; Saturday, July 21: 5pm, and Tuesday, Aug. 28: 7:30pm.

There aren't any meetings scheduled for today.
