Service Awards Presented to Norwalk Students at Martin Luther King Celebration

Fifteen students from Briggs, Brien McMahon and Norwalk High School were honored for their service on Monday during the Rev.Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration at West Rocks Middle School.

Fifteen seniors from the three Norwalk high schools were recognized for their service at the Martin Luther King "Eyes on the Prize" ceremony at West Rocks on Monday.

West Rocks Middle School Principal Dr. Lynne Moore read out the students names along with an impressive and varied list of projects they had committed themselves to.

Projects included editing the yearbook, helping students who arrive in Norwalk from different countries, founding Peaceworks, collecting money for earthquake victims in Haiti, and even founding a local chapter of Safe Rides.

The recipients included student council members and sports team captains. One student volunteered at Lockwood-Mathews Mansion. Another volunteered at the Maritime Aquarium. 

Many of the students have tutored. Others have served as mentors. 

Service award recipient, Allan Lenard, who Dr. Moore described as "totally professional," has assisted Norwalk's veterans and is a commissioned officer for 164 cadets in the Navy Junior ROTC .
