Major Snowstorm on the Way. No School This Friday

Edith Wheeler Memorial Library and the Monroe Senior Center will be closed tomorrow. Supt. of Schools James Agostine is monitoring the situation.

Update: Thursday, 5:25 p.m. Supt. of Schools James Agostine decided to cancel school for Friday. The following message is on Monroe Public Schools' website: "Due to the impending storm, schools are closed on Friday, February 8th. Kindergarten registration is on as scheduled for this evening.  Thank you and be safe."

Original Story:

A snow blower is already parked beneath the entryway of Monroe Town Hall and First Selectman Steve Vavrek, who is serving as interim Public Works director, says the Highway Department's plows are also ready to go for the heavy snow predicted for Friday.

"We've basically mobilized everything to get ready for the storm," Vavrek said during an interview in his office.

He said he has been meeting with the DPW and police every morning, adding, "We want to make it safer and get people off the roads when the snow starts."

Edith Wheeler Memorial Library and Monroe Senior Center will both be closed tomorrow when between 17 and 24 inches of snow is expected, according to Vavrek, who said Supt. of Schools James Agostine is monitoring the situation and should make a decision on whether or not to cancel school by tonight or early tomorrow morning.

Town hall will be open during its regular hours, Vavrek said.

The first selectman said a parking ban will be in effect on Friday, barring people from parking their vehicles on the side of the road, so plows have room to operate.
