Norwalk Armory Site Eyed For AT&T Cell Tower

New Canaan town officials say they approve of the project; public hearing to be held in Norwalk next year.

AT&T is reportedly planning to erect a new cell tower, possibly two, on the property of the Norwalk Armory, located at 290 New Canaan Ave., near the intersection of Route 123 and the Merritt Parkway.

Company officials say the new tower(s) will improve cellular service along the Merritt Parkway, Route 123, and throughout the residential area, which has reportedly been prone to dead spots and weak signal strength due to its topography.

According to an article in the New Canaan Advertiser, several members of the New Canaan Town Council expressed support for the project during a meeting last week, saying it will improve cellular communications — and thus emergency communications — in the area.

New Canaan, however, has no authority over the project, which includes the construction of a 40-foot by 80-foot compound at the back of the armory site, with one or two 140-foot monopole towers.

According to a report there will be a public hearing on the proposal sometime after the beginning of 2012 in Norwalk.
