Norwalk Voter Turnout Normal

Voter turnout as of 4 p.m. seemed not very different than 2009, according to the city's Democratic registrar of voters.

Voter turnout as of 4 p.m. seemed normal for a municipal election, says Stuart W. Wells III, Democratic registrar of voters for Norwalk.

By 4 p.m. 9,092 of the city's 41,723 voters had turned out, or 22 percent of the total, according to the Voter Registrar Office. With four more hours of voting until the polls close at 8 p.m., there was still plenty of time for the city to catch up to its total of about 13,500 voters in the 2009 municipal election, Wells said.

District A4, which has only 363 voters, had the highest voter turnout in the city, with 33 percent voting as of 4 p.m. Democratic Common Council candidate Michael Miklave is from that district, and perhaps he was able to get a good portion of his neighbors to turn out, Wells speculated.

Rowayton (Districts E1 and E2) tends to have somewhat higher voter turnout in the early morning, perhaps because many voters want to take care of voting before they catch trains into New York City to work, Wells said.

As of 10 a.m., District E1 had 9 percent voter turnout, the fourth best in the city, and in District E2, 11.38 percent of registered voters had been to the polls already, the highest turnout of any district in Norwalk. Other districts tend to catch up a bit with Rowayton after work, he said. By 4 p.m., 22.68 percent of voters had been to the polls in District E1, only the eighth highest turnout in the city. District E2, was the second highest, at 29.75 percent.

In District B, Republicans did not put up any candidates. Turnout there was lowest in the city, at 15.74 percent in District B1 and 16.18 percent in District B2.

As of Monday, 648 voters turned in absentee ballots for the election, he said. That number is not unusual either.
