Gov. Dannel P. Malloy will deliver the commencement address on Thursday at the graduation of 's Class of 2011, Mayor Richard A. Moccia said Friday (see video accompanying this article). The class has 688 candidates eligible for graduation this year.

According to a college news release: "Commencement is slated for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in a large outdoor tent in the East Campus parking lot (rain or shine). Graduation candidates will begin lining up for the academic procession at 3:30 p.m. in the second and third floors of the East Campus building."

Essentially, city officials did what the governor and state Legislature did: Pass a budget with cuts and then tell unions that they either must accept some layoffs or reduced benefits & fewer raises for all. A "discussion of strategies or negotiation with respect to collective bargaining" item is on the board's agenda, but that item is expected to be discussed in executive session.

Moccia said one of the biggest events of the week will be the Police Memorial Service in honor of police who have died in the course of duty is scheduled to be held in front of the headquarters at 1 Monroe St. on Friday at 11 a.m. (Coffee and pastries will be served an hour before the ceremony; lunch will be served afterward, starting at about noon; anyone attending should notify the Police Department using the link at the beginning of this paragraph.)
