Garfunkel Announces Candidacy For Mayor [Update]

Democrat says he wants to lead Norwalk toward its great potential.

After ten years as the city’s town clerk, Andrew S. Garfunkel announced Saturday he’s running for mayor.

Addressing an audience of about 75 supporters at the Hilton Garden Inn on Main Avenue, Garfunkel, a Democrat, said he wants to lead Norwalk toward its great potential.

Garfunkel will be challenging three-term Republican Mayor Richard A. Moccia, who announced in December he’s running for another two years in office.

Following the announcement, the city's last Democratic mayor, Alex Knopp, said, "Especially in times of economic stress like we've been through, you need a city government that's innovative and thinking outside the box as possible, and I hope he'll bring some of these skills to allow us to get better services at lower cost; and that, to me, should be the goal of the mayor."
