Death Was a Highway for This Moose on the Loose

Police held off taking any action until the animal crossed Route 72 in New Britain, then they shot and killed him.

The point of no return for a moose that was spotted wandering in the West Main Street area of New Britain early Wednesday morning was Route 72.

After New Britain police and state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection representatives tracked the moose for hours, the animal crossed the major thoroughfare several times, according to an NBC-30 report, and was shot and killed.

“It’s something we don’t like to have to do, but obviously we’re literally less than 100 feet from Route 72. ... With rush hour … we had to take the action we did,” Kyle Overturf of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection told NBC-30. "“Vehicles will hit the legs of the moose, and the moose tends to come up through the windshield."

The euthanization of the moose comes just a day after another moose was sighted in New Milford, about an hour west of New Britain.
