Bill Seeks to Allow Jewish Condo Residents to Hang Mezuzahs

Senate Majority Leader Martin M. Looney (D-New Haven) announced on Tuesday that he would support legislation that would prohibit condominium bylaws preventing Jewish residents from hanging mezuzahs on their doorposts, according to the Connecticut Post.

The legislation stems from an incident in which after hanging a mezuzah on the doorpost of her unit at California Condominiums. After Cadranel threatened the association with a lawsuit, the board apologized and canceled the fine.

Looney told the Post that the legislation, which would be added as an amendment to an existing condominium rights bill, would hopefully "prevent this from happening again."

Mandated under religious laws, a mezuzah is a small plaque containing a scroll inscribed with a Hebrew prayer.
