Woman Leaves Accident Scene, Arrives At Police HQ Next Morning

Reportedly paid $100 for ride to train station after crashing borrowed car.

A woman who allegedly crashed a car Monday night she’d borrowed from a friend and then walked away reportedly appeared at Norwalk Police headquarters Tuesday morning to say she was the driver.

Police said Norwalk resident Abigail Hamilton, 43, was questioned and a report prepared, but she was not charged. Police spokesman Officer Carlton Giles said the accident remains under investigation.

The accident, reported at 10:44 p.m., occurred near the intersection of Strawberry Hill Ave. and Raymond Terrace.

When officers arrived, they found a Mazda with heavy front-end damage that had crashed into a stone wall. The section of wall struck reportedly also had extensive damage, with a portion collapsed on the sidewalk.

Before striking the wall, the Mazda sideswiped a parked Audi belonging to a resident of the area. Officers said they measured 40-foot-long skid marks leading up to where the wall was struck.

Residents said a woman exited the Mazda, started cursing, asked them for a ride to the train station, said she had no license, and then walked away.

An officer began driving toward the South Norwalk Train Station and was flagged down by a woman who said she’d just been paid $100 by a woman on Myrtle St. for a ride to the station. She said the woman she drove said she had just had an accident on Strawberry Hill Ave., had lupus, and had no driver's license, but expected it would be restored in three weeks. The officer drove the woman to the station, but they were unable to locate the woman given the ride.

The website MayoClinic.com describes lupus as a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when the body's immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems, including joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs.

Officers contacted the Mazda’s owner, Norwalk resident Michael Falcone, who told them he lent his car to Hamilton because she needed to pick up medicine at a CVS. He said she hadn't called him about the accident and he didn’t know her whereabouts or how to contact her.
