Woman Reportedly Leaves Children Unattended at Shelter Overnight

A woman was arrested Saturday afternoon after leaving her children unattended through the night, according to Norwalk Police.

Twaka Jenkins, 26, her 10-year-old and her 3-year-old had reportedly been staying at Open Door Shelter at 4 Merritt St. for about two weeks, police said.

The staff called police at about 8 a.m. Saturday because Jenkins had allegedly left her children unattended overnight and had not returned to the shelter, according to police. Staff told police that it was not the first time Jenkins had done so, police said.

Jenkins reportedly returned to the shelter at about 10:30 a.m. and was arrested at about 1 p.m., according to police.

She was charged with two counts of risk of injury for a minor and her bond was set at $20,000. Her court date is scheduled for July 23, according to the police arrest log.

The Department of Children and Families took Jenkins' children into custody, police said.
