Westport Avenue Gas Station Robbery Nets Cash

Bandit displays handgun, gets away despite quick police response.

A man holding a pistol robbed Smitty's Service Center, 207 Westport Ave., at around 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

He fled after taking an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. Numerous patrol units conducted a search of the busy road, which is lined along both sides mostly with retail businesses.

A description of the gunman was broadcast but not released publicly. No one was injured.
