Wedged Under Tractor-Trailer, Dragged 200 Feet on I-95

After an accident just southbound from Exit 14, it took 10 minutes to extract the driver from what was left of the car, but he went to Norwalk Hospital and was reported in stable condition.

A Toyota Corolla became wedged under the trailer of a truck on Interstate 95 at about 1:30 p.m. Friday and was dragged that way for 200 feet before the truck stopped.

Norwalk firefighters took about 10 minutes removing the car's roof and a door in order to extricate the driver from what was left of the four-door sedan, according to a statement released by the Fire Department. The driver was taken to Norwalk Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition late Friday afternoon.

The accident took place in the southbound lanes, just past Exit 14. Southbound traffic was squeezed into one lane, and vehicles had to use the shoulder lane. Fire crews left the scene at 2:05 p.m., and state police continued an investigation of the scene until 2:20 p.m., when the lanes were restored to regular traffic.

The truck's tandem tires came to rest against the driver's door, which was crushed in, and only inches from the driver's seat (see photo). The truck driver was uninjured and the trailer received minor damage. The truck had to be backed off of the car for a tow truck to get to the smaller vehicle and take it away.

The Fire Department sent a fire engine, rescue car and command car to the scene.
