Two men charged with stealing from a tip jar

A total of $60 was taken from a tip jar at a car wash at 83 Fort Point St. But police said the store video showed not only one man reaching into the jar and another acting as a lookout, but also the license plate of the car they were using.

Police gave this account of the matter:

When the matter was reported to police at 7:30 p.m. Friday, the store manager said he had just exchanged many bills in the jar for larger ones, so he knew the jar contained $60. Police spoke to the owner of the car, a Woodward Avenue resident, who said she had allowed her son, Jarrett Smith to use it.

Smith, 21, of an unknown address, and his cousin, William Smith, 23, of 51 Lincoln St., Norwalk, admitted to taking the money and turned themselves in to police. Jarrett had reached into the jar while William had acted as lookout. Each was charged with sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy.
