State Police: Highways Dangerous Over New Year's Weekend
State police release statistics on accidents.
According to statistics released by the driving on the highways around the state during New Year's weekend was more dangerous than a year ago.
A man and woman from Rhode Island were killed early Sunday morning on I-95 in Westport. There were no deaths on the highways in Connecticut last year during the holiday weekend.
However, state police reported there were 268 motor vehicle accidents over the New Year's weekend. That is up 25 percent from the 214 that occurred last year. Police made fewer speeding arrests this past weekend, about 1,100 compared to 1,200 last year. The crackdown on DUI showed an improvement. Arrests for driving under the influence dropped from 61 to 44.
