Original Story: Mayor Rilling has declared a snow emergency effective at 8:00 AM today Tuesday January 21, 2014.

Behind the scenes at DPW. Read about DPW's approach to de-icing and how they use technology in tandem with an up-to-date fleet.

The following is the text of Mayor Rilling's call on the Notify Norwalk System:

Today I ordered a snow emergency and vehicles must be removed from the snow emergency routes to aid plowing operations. Also, if you have a driveway, please park in the driveway which will also facilitate snow removal.

All city parking garages are opened free of charge for relocating your car if needed. By law snow and ice must be removed from passenger cars, trucks and commercial vehicles for everyone's driving safety.

Falling, blowing and drifting snow will cause hazardous travel and walking conditions across the area possibly impacting the late afternoon and evening commute.

Extreme cold and low wind chills could cause frostbite, so please dress accordingly.

The city will use the main and South Norwalk libraries, as well as the
community room at the Norwalk Police Dept. for warming centers if needed.

Norwalk Public Schools are on an early dismissal schedule today. Extremely cold weather will follow this storm and I ask all residents to check on neighbors who are elderly to see if they need assist during this emergency.

For norwalk's customer service line call (203) 854-3200 will be open for service requests or complaints. Updates will be posted on the city's website www.norwalkct.org

DMV UPDATE: All Department of Motor Vehicles offices will close today at 2:45 p.m. due to the inclement weather. Please consult the DMV website at ct.gov/dmv for further updates regarding the opening times of offices tomorrow(Wednesday) following the storm.
