Marine units from Norwalk and Westport rescued a man Monday afternoon after his sailboat capsized on Long Island Sound.
The man was wearing a floatation vest but was becoming hypothermic before he was removed from the water, said Sgt. Peter Lapak, commander of the Norwalk Police Marine Unit.
The Norwalk Fire Department Marine Unit and a Westport Police boat also responded.

The man was able to call 911, Lapak said, because he had a cell phone in his pocket in a waterproof bag. He dialed 911 with the phone in the bag, Lapak said.
The man's call was received shortly before noon. His overturned 12-to-14-foot-long boat was south of Sprite Island, which is off Norwalk's Shorehaven Road in East Norwalk.

Lapak said the man was kept afloat by his vest, but he was wearing only a T-shirt and shorts and was very cold when he was rescued.
Westport officers were able to right the boat, and the man reboarded it and resumed sailing it to his mooring. He did not require medical assistance.
