Police: Pot at the Passport Office, Heroin in the Car

The U.S. Passport office at 50 Washington St. gets customers from all over the state, some of whom forget they have marijuana with them: Police allege this is another instance.

A New Haven man about to enter the U.S. Passport office at 50 Washington St. Wednesday morning turned around near the metal detector, went outside and put something in his sock, according to a member of the security detail who watched him.

Norwalk police gave the following account of what happened next:

When the man, John Sanford, 38, returned, security personnel questioned him because they were concerned he might have been secreting something that would make people in the office unsafe.

Sanford then pulled out of his sock a small plastic bag containing marijuana, and said that when he first arrived at the office he'd suddenly remembered that he had it in his pocket.

Norwalk police, called to the scene at 10:17 a.m., went to the man's car, where his 16-year-old daughter was waiting for him.

A police officer noticed numerous bundles of glassine envelopes, along with a plastic bag containing rice. Both looked very much like heroin prepared for sale. A police dog, Czar, also at the scene, also indicated the envelopes contained narcotics.

Sanford was arrested on various drug-possession charges and a charge of risk of injury to or impairing the morals of a minor. His bond was initially set at $100,000.

Break-ins, burglaries and broken windows

Someone threw a brick through the driver's seat side window of a car parked at 370 Main Ave. at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Nothing appeared to be stolen.

In a separate incident at 4:21 a.m. Thursday, police received a report of a resident's broken window at 22 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Nothing appeared to be stolen.

A satellite radio receiver and drills valued at $800 were reported stolen from van parked at the Air Solutions business at 29 Hollow Tree Road sometime between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday.

Tools were stolen from a GMC K2500 vehicle parked at 247 Flax Hill Road sometime before 11:12 a.m. Wednesday, when the theft was reported to police.
