Police: Driving with 3 Kids and 3X the Legal Alcohol Limit

The following information was provided by the Norwalk Police Department. Neither arrests nor charges indicate a conviction, and neither means that a person is guilty of what police allege.

A Norwalk mother was driving three 9-year-old boys in a car Saturday afternoon while she had almost three times the legal blood-alcohol limit in her, police said.

Police gave this account of the incident:

A police officer saw a Ford Windstar go through a red light on Ann Street near North Main Street. On Washington Street, the officer stopped the car, which was being driven by Cynthia Aragon, 48, of 10 Fort Point St. Also in the car were three 9-year-old boys, including Aragon's son.

Aragon was slurring her words, her eyes were bloodshot and glassy, and she found it difficult to get her special operators driving permit to show the officer. The permit is used by drivers whose licenses have been suspended for driving while intoxicated. Her permit had expired in 2010.

Aragon failed a field sobriety test, and a blood-alcohol test showed she was driving with 0.239 blood-alcohol level, almost three times the legal limit of 0.08.

She told police she had been drinking seven or eight glasses of alcoholic drinks that day and didn't think she was drunk before her vehicle was stopped.

The mother of one of the boys came and took the three boys to their homes. Aragon was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to obey a traffic light and three counts of risk of injury to a minor. Her bond was initially set at $1,000.

17-year-old assaulted

A 17-year-old resident of Ward Street, brought to Norwalk Hospital by his mother, told police that when he answered the door at 1 a.m. he was dragged outside and beaten up by a group of about 15 people, police said.

Police gave this account of the incident:

The boy, who had a sore lower lip and sore arm, told police he was quickly knocked to the ground. He said he didn't know any of his attackers and couldn't give them a description of them, including how they left the scene.

The boy's cell phone was missing. He said he didn't know if it had been taken or simply fell out of his pocket when he was hurt. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Vehicle burglarized

Sometime between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, a vehicle parked at The Home Depot parking lot was burglarized, its owner reported, although the owner said items may have been taken from the vehicle earlier in the day when it was parked in Stamford.

Among the items reported missing were a chipping hammer, 10 diamond wheels valued at $180 apiece, and seven grinders valued at $500 each. It was unclear from the police report how entry was made into the vehicle.
