Police: City Man Strikes Several Vehicles Driving Stolen Van

Officers use electroshock gun to subdue him.

Police say a 21-year-old city man struck several cars Thursday afternoon while driving a stolen van, and had to be shot with an electroshock weapon before officers could control him to take him into custody.

The van came to the attention of police at 4:31 p.m. when two officers observed it strike a car near the intersection of West Avenue and Pine Street and continue without stopping. The van headed north on West Ave. with the officers in pursuit.

The van turned right onto Wall Street and struck several more cars before crashing into a car at Commerce Street and coming to a stop.

The officers reported the driver, later identified as Steven Carey, exited the vehicle and began smashing out its windows with his bare hands. Carey then fled on foot, police said. When the officers caught him, they reported he resisted so fiercely they shot him with a Taser gun.

A Taser gun causes momentary paralysis by passing an electrical charge through a person's body.

After being taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment for the Taser shot, he was transported to police headquarters.

Carey, of 289 Silvermine Ave., was charged with third-degree larceny for allegedly stealing the van, along with reckless driving, three counts of evading responsibility, following too closely, driving the wrong way, and failure to obey a traffic control signal.

He was released on a promise to appear in court April 26.

The van's owner reported it stolen from his business at 100 Bouton St. shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday. He said the 1996 Ford E-150 van had been parked in a driveway and his brother noticed it was missing.
