Police: 20 Arrests, 200 Infractions Issued in Drunk Driving Crackdown

Another sobriety checkpoint will be set up this Saturday on West Avenue, according to police.

The Norwalk Police Department announced on Wednesday its initial arrest results for the 2013 national "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest" campaign, which launched in November and includes the use of sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols, particularly during high-risk nighttime hours.

“Officers have made 20 impaired driving arrests and issued more than 200 infractions in support of the national crackdown," according to statement released by Melissa Evans of the Norwalk Police Department. "The crackdown campaign runs through the Labor Day weekend and Norwalk officers will continue to be out in full force to help get more impaired drivers off local roadways.”

Evans pointed out that in 2008 alone, nearly 12,000 people were killed in U.S. motor vehicle crashes that involved a driver or motorcycle rider with a BAC of .08 g/dL or higher, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“It’s clear that too many people still don’t understand that impaired driving is no accident—nor is it a victimless crime," she said. "So our message to motorists is simple and unwavering: if you get caught driving while impaired, you will be arrested. No exceptions.”

The department will have a sobriety checkpoint on Saturday, March 30 beginning at 7 p.m. and running throughout the night on West Avenue.
