Norwalk Youth Tracked Down by Police Dog After Dumping Scooter

"Kimbo," one of the K-9 officers of the Norwalk Police Department, tracked a 16-year-old youth in the Knight Street area early Monday after the teen dumped a scooter he was riding.

A 16-year-old Norwalk teenager was arrested on criminal trespass and interfering with an officer charges early Monday after he dumped a scooter he was riding and ran away from police as they approached him.

The youth was spotted by police riding the scooter erratically at about 4 a.m. on Knight Street and as police drove up to him, he dumped the scooter and ran off.

“Kimbo,” one of the department's K-9 officers was called to the scene and tracked the suspect's scent through nearby side streets and wooded areas to Lewis Street and the parking lot of the First Congregational Church.

As Kimbo and officers approached the suspect, he surrendered. He told police he had borrowed the scooter from friends, but he would not name them and would not disclose where he had gotten it. The ignition area of the scooter had been damaged and was being operated without a key, police said.

In addition to the above mentioned charges, the youth was issued infractions for operating without a license, operating a scooter without eye protection and making an illegal U turn. He was released and is scheduled to appear in Juvenile Court at Mead Hall in Bridgeport later this month.
