Norwalk Police Arrest Alleged Thief Following Foot Chase

While the suspect was in handcuffs waiting to be put into a police cruiser, he fled on foot through a parking lot, according to a police report.

Norwalk police were called to Stew Leonard’s Monday morning to investigate a suspicious man that was trying to sell a camera outside of the grocery store, police said.

When police arrived, the man had already made his way across the street to Walgreens. After police spoke with the man, identified as Idris Gay, 22, of East Hartford, police learned that he had an active arrest warrant from the Greenwich Police Department.

While Gay was in handcuffs waiting to be put into a police cruiser, he fled on foot through the Walgreens parking lot. The officer caught up with the man and took him into custody, police said.

Gay was in possession of a backpack when he was arrested. There were several items in the backpack, which turned out to be stolen, including a Motorolla phone, three Norelco electric trimmers, and a package of Hanes shirts. The total value of the stolen goods was about $185, police said.

The arresting officer went back to Walgreens to view the security surveillance tapes to verify that the merchandise was actually stolen, police said.

Gay was charged with interfering with an officer and larceny. His charges out of Greenwich were not available in the report.

Gay was issued a $10,000 bond. He is due in court on April 17.
