Driver Injured in One-Car Accident on Merritt Parkway

City officials and the Connecticut State Police responded to a motor vehicle accident on the northbound side of the Merritt Parkway Tuesday evening that injured one individual, according to a statement released by the Norwalk Fire Department. 

Norwalk combined dispatched received a call at 7:57 pm from the Connecticut State police reporting a one car accident between exit 40 and 41 with possible entrapment. Shortly after, initial dispatch reports started coming in that the vehicle was on fire.

Norwalk Fire units arrived six minutes after being dispatched and found one vehicle up against the West Rocks Road bridge, the Jeep Cherokee was engulfed in flames.  The male driver, the only occupant, was removed from the vehicle by another motorist before the passenger compartment became involved in flames.

The driver was treated by state troopers and firefighters until a Norwalk Hospital ambulance arrived on scene. The extent of his injuries are currently unknown.

The Merritt Parkway was shut down for approximately 75 minutes while the fire was being put out and the accident investigation. The Norwalk Fire Department responded with two engines a rescue and a command car with 13 firefighters.   

Connecticut State Police are investigating the cause of the accident and had the road reopened at 9 p.m.
