Norwalk Man Arrested With Weapon After Assaulting Police Officer

The man put up a fight with police when they attempted to handcuff him, according to police documentation.

A Norwalk man is facing felony charges after he crashed his car on Wednesday and ran from police, according to an arrest report.
While on routine patrol, a Norwalk police officer saw a blue Acura turn from Catherine Street to Main Street at a high rate of speed. The car screeched its tires around the corner and then accelerated away, police said.
The officer lost sight of the vehicle, but the officer drove towards I-95, where he thought the vehicle was heading. The driver allegedly crashed the car into the curb in front of Collins Funeral Home, located at 92 Eastern Avenue, police said.
The driver then fled on foot, but another officer was able to catch up to him. As the suspect, identified as Edwin Lugo, of Bridgeport, attempted to climb a chain link fence, an officer grabbed him and brought him to the ground, police said.
As the officer was approaching the suspect, he witnessed him throw a white bag that contained marijuana over the fence, police said.
When the officer was attempting to handcuff Lugo, the initial responding officer arrived and witnessed Lugo pull out a set of brass knuckles from his pocket. The officer then assisted in handcuffing Lugo, police said.
Norwalk police charged Lugo with illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension, evading responsibility, interfering with an officer, assault on a peace officer, engaging in pursuit, reckless driving, carrying a dangerous weapon, possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana and simple trespass, according to an arrest report.
Lugo was issued a $50,000 bond. He is due in court April 25.
