Norwalk Man Arrested for Assaulting 12-Year-Old Boy, His Mother

A 28 year-old Norwalk man was arrested on Saturday after he allegedly punched and kicked a 12-year-old boy and pushed the boy's mother, according to police.

Officers were called to 40 Center Street to respond to a disturbance and, upon their arrival, Joseph Ortega, who was a resident of the home, started telling police that nothing was going on although officers observed a young boy crying in front of the home. Eventually, a witness told the officers that Ortega threw a Nerf ball at the boy, punched him multiple times with a closed fist and then kicked him, according to police.

When the mother tried to help her son, Ortega reportedly pushed her. When the juvenile tried to defend his mother, Ortega allegedly assaulted him once more. The mother had no visible injuries and her son had bruises on his arm, but did not require medical attention, police said.

The police report did not state the relationship between Ortega and the two victims, but he allegedly told police that they were invited guests at his home. Ortega was charged with breach of peace, third-degree assault and risk of injury to a minor. His bond was set at $5,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 20.
