Norwalk Firefighters Battle Back-to-Back Blazes

Norwalk firefighters battled two separate fires early Tuesday morning on Van Zant Street and Spring Hill Avenue. No injuries were reported.

Norwalk firefighters fought separate fires early Tuesday morning on Van Zant Street and Spring Hill Avenue, the department announced.

No injuries were reported in either blaze, both of which were brought under control quickly, said Deputy Fire Chief Ed Prescott.

The first fire occurred just before 6:30 a.m. in a paint spraying booth at Casale Auto Body at 9 Van Zant St. Prescott said that after the shop's owner arrived at work, he turned on the ventilation system and noticed the room was filling with smoke.

Upon arrival, firefighters ventilated the exhaust system inside the shop to attack the blaze, while crews also fought the fire from the roof. The fire was under control in about 20 minutes, and the structure only sustained minor charring to the roof.

Prescott said the business will remain open while Fire Inspector Luca Feola investigates the cause.

In the second blaze at 28 Spring Hill Ave., a detached, single-car garage caught fire at about 7 a.m. and was brought under control by firefighters in less than 15 minutes.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by acting Fire Marshal Chris Hansen. The garage was used to store paint and spray foam insulation equipment.
