Body of Norwalk Canoeist Found

Norwalk police issued the following news release on Tuesday:

The body of the missing boater, the subject of yesterday’s search in the Long Island Sound off Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk has been recovered.

A Connecticut State Police (CSP) Team using an advanced side scan sonar unit located the 40- year-old Norwalk resident overnight. The body was located underwater, south/southwest of the original search area.


The CSP vessel brought the body of the boater ashore where Norwalk Police met them. The body was turned over to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy. There were no visible signs of trauma.

The victim’s wallet, containing personal identification and cash, was located in his pants pocket. The name on the identification matched the name on a passport that had been recovered along with the canoe earlier in the day.


The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

A 40-year-old Norwalk man is presumed dead after sinking a canoe at Calf Pasture Beach. His name is being withheld until confirmed by his next of kin. 

The missing man did not wear a life jacket and did not know how to swim, Lt. Paul Resnick of the Norwalk Police Department told The Hour.

Four men piled into a two-man canoe in Long Island Sound yesterday shortly before noon. Three men were recovered, alive, by emergency crews who were called in at 12:20pm. They were taken to the Norwalk Police Department for questioning. 

The police also said that alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
