Near Drowning Incident Leads to Assault Arrest

A 911 call reporting a drowning ended in an arrest for assault in Norwalk Monday, according to police.

A mother called 911 from 138 Strawberry Hill Ave. and told dispatchers that her 11-year-old son had been playing with a toy car when she heard gasping for air from the bathroom and discovered her son was in the bathtub, police said. Dispatch instructed her on how to give the child CPR, and the child, who began breathing on his own, was taken to the hospital at about 10 p.m., according to police.

Police were unsure of the child's condition after being taken to the hospital.

At the same address, after the medical call had been completed, an officer allegedly noticed two black males fighting. Officers came around to the back of the house and reportedly saw a younger male, Antoni Profit, 33, of 138 Strawberry Hill Ave., striking an older male with his fist, police said.

After police broke up the fight, the older man, who is 66 years old and is the grandfather of the child who had been taken to the hospital, told police that Profit had asked him why he didn't go to the hospital with the child. The 66-year-old man claimed that he had told Profit he didn't need to, to which Profit responded by getting angry and breaking a nearby guitar over the older man's head, according to police.

When the older man fell to the floor, Profit allegedly began punching him in the face, police said. Though the older man had a swollen left eye with a laceration, he refused medical attention, according to police.

Profit was charged with assault in the second degree, assault in the second degree of an elderly person and interfering with an officer. His bond was set at $5,000 and his court date was scheduled for Tuesday.

Profit appeared to be related to both the older man and the child who had been taken to the hospital, but the relationship was not clear on the report, police said.
