Naked Rampage on Van Zant; Assault Charges on Woodward

The following information was provided by the Norwalk Police Department. Arrests or charges do not indicate a conviction. Unless otherwise noted, these incidents are not connected with each other.

A naked man in a strange rage trashed his own home on Van Zant Street on Monday, stabbed himself repeatedly with a steak knife, then ran outside and smashed into the glass door of a nearby bar, police said.

Johnnie Glee, 30, of 37 Van Zant St., had to be tasered when police couldn't get him under control, according to a police report. Police gave the following account of the incident, based on their own observations and witnesses' reports:

At 3:20 p.m., police were called to Glee's home on the report of a disturbance there. Glee, already naked, had been let into the home by a family member, and after he went inside he started throwing household items around and generally trashing the apartment.

When he grabbed a steak knife and began stabbing himself, a family member called 911. Glee then went outside again, still naked, and went across the street to My Place bar, where he broke the glass door and slammed his body against the building.

Police confronted Glee at that point and tasered him when he refused to cooperate with them. With cuts to his chest and back and injuries to his hands, he was taken to Norwalk Hospital's emergency department for treatment, then arrested.

Glee was charged with second- and third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree breach of peace, disorderly conduct and risk of injury to a child. His bond was initially set at $20,000.

2. Allegation: beers, a knife, a fight, an arrest

Police responding to the report of a disturbance were told by a man that he and Jose A. Caal probably had 25 to 30 beers apiece before he bumped into Caal and a fight started.

Police gave this account of the incident, which occurred just after midnight Tuesday:

In a second-floor apartment at 103 Woodward Ave., Jose A. Caal, 29, who lives there with several others, was bumped by another man who had been drinking many beers with him.

The bump, which the man said was accidental, occurred when the man was walking past Caal in the kitchen. Caal then started yelling at the man, punched him in the ear, then took a knife and lunged at him with it.

The man said he backed away and wasn't hurt by the knife (or seriously hurt from the punch), but was afraid. Caal then lost his balance and fell. He landed on a broken beer bottle near a fire escape, cutting his leg.

Several residents of the apartment told police they knew no details of the incident.

Caal was taken to Norwalk Hospital emergency department for treatment, then charged with attempted first-degree assault and third-degree assault. He was initially held on $25,000 bond.

3. Rinaldo's Deli on Main Avenue burglarized

When the owner of Rinaldo's Deli arrived at the 456 Main Ave. store at 5:15 a.m. today, he found the front door pried open, the tip jar taken and money removed from the cash register, he told police.

The tip jar may have been dropped in the burglary, since quite a few coins were all over the floor, according to police. The owner said little money was kept in the cash register overnight. The Norwalk Police detective division is investigating the incident.

4. Burglaries and burglary attempts

  • Two cell phones and the chargers for each, along with some keys, were stolen from a car parked overnight Sunday to sometime before 8:25 a.m. Monday at 135 Flax Hill Road. The owner told police she had forgotten to lock the 2008 Acura.
  • Someone damaged a door lock overnight Monday to sometime before 6:41 a.m. Tuesday at 83 East Ave., the location of Executive House Haircutting. Apparently the business was not entered, police were told.
  • Two cars were broken into overnight in the area of 44 Beau St., police said. The break-ins were first reported to police at 7:48 a.m. Tuesday, and police reports with further information hadn't yet been written by the 9 a.m. news briefing, police said.

5. Hit-and-run motor vehicle accident

No one was injured when a red car made contact with another motor vehicle at about 7 a.m. Tuesday morning on Woodward Avenue, but the driver of the red car sped off instead of stopping, police were told.

The other driver called police and gave them the license plate number. Police found that the car had been reported stolen that morning in Bridgeport.
