Men Assaulted By Mob Outside Food Market

Victims say group of about 20 attacked them after leaving store.

Two men reported being attacked by a mob Monday night as they exited a grocery store on Cedar Street.

Speaking to officers at Norwalk Hospital, where one of them sought treatment following the incident, the pair said they had just left the Caribbean Grocery Store, 161 Cedar St., at about 7 p.m. and were entering a car when a group of about 20 young men jumped one of them and began punching him.

The group also began kicking the car, they reported. Both said they did not recognize any of the assailants, who, they said, appeared to be in their 20s and were wearing black clothing with blue accent colors.

At some point, they reported, a member of the group pulled a black handgun from his waistband. The men said they ran back into the store and the group fled.

The men then drove to the hospital.

Police spokesman Lt. Praveen John said officers went to the store and a clerk there confirmed there had been a fight outside. He could not identify the assailants.

John did not have a description of the victims' injuries, but he said the man who sought treatment is a 40-year-old Norwalk resident.
