Man Charged with 2010 Theft of Backpack at Homeless Shelter

Police say Andre Wallace was caught on camera stealing a backpack with a laptop and almost $2,000 in cash and valuables in a homeless shelter.

After more than three years, Norwalk police caught up with a man wanted on an accusation that he stole from a homeless shelter a backpack with a laptop and almost $2,000 in cash and other valuables.

Norwalk police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the matter:

Bridgeport police came into contact with Andre Wallace, 27, of no known address, and a records check showed that he was wanted on an arrest warrant by Norwalk police.

Wallace is accused of taking the backpack, and a surveillance camera at what is now called the the Open Door Shelter at 4 Merritt St. caught him doing it, according the warrant. He was charged with fourth-degree larceny.

Wallace was turned over to Norwalk police, who arrested him at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and initially held him on $5,000 bond. If he met bond, he was to appear Jan. 17 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
