Incident Goes from Traffic Accident to Apparent Suicide

Police found the driver of one vehicle in an accident Tuesday evening had been shot -- apparently by his own hand.

What started out as a two-vehicle traffic accident Tuesday evening turned into what appears to have been a suicide when one of the drivers was found shot, apparently by his own hand.

Norwalk police, responding to the report of an accident at about 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Van Buren Avenue and Bedford Street found two drivers with injuries.

One driver, who seemed to have minor back pain, was taken to Norwalk Hospital and has since been released. The other driver, a 59-year-old Norwalk man, had a gunshot wound.

The wound appeared to be self-inflicted, police said. The man was immediately given cardiopulmonary recuscitation and rushed to Norwalk Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Norwalk detectives are investigating the incident. The victim has been identified, but police are waiting to notify family members before releasing the man's name. The state medical examiner's office is expected to conduct an autopsy on the body later in the week.
